Ruger American Ranch Rifle: Fieldtester Review

Ruger American Ranch Rifle: Fieldtester Review

If you’re after a basic, working rifle with no frills, the Ruger American Ranch could be exactly what you’re looking for. “It’s a Ruger – so it’s rugged, it’s reliable, and it does what it’s supposed to do,” says Andy Norris of distributors Viking Arms. “It’s a great little all-round performer.”

The American Ranch is a straightforward bolt-action rifle with a 16in threaded barrel so you can add a moderator and it’s still easy to handle. There’s a Picatinny rail for fitting any scope or night vision sight, a cocking indicator, and a top tang safety that falls nicely under your thumb. It takes a Magpul type magazine, so you have the option of 20 or 30 rounds if you want.

“This isn’t so much a beginner’s gun, more for someone who wants a hard working tool,” says Andy. “It’s very popular with clubs for that reason.”

“Not everyone wants a straight-pull AR type rifle, and this will shoot just as well. I’ve seen people shoot beyond 600 yards with this dinky little rifle, it’s incredible really, but it’s a gun that won’t let you down.”
