The Haenel Jaeger 10 series are classic bolt-action hunting rifles from the Merkel factory in Suhl, Germany. Viking Arms import two models – the adjustable synthetic stocked Pro, and the Heritage range you see here, with Grade 4 wood stock.
“It’s a great working bit of kit with a bit of classic style as well,” says Viking’s Andy Norris. “These retail at around £1,700, so that’s a lot of gun for the money. It’s a great choice if you’re looking for something a bit different and don’t want to run with the crowd.”
The rifle has all the features a British shooter could want. It comes with removable open sights, and factory threaded for a moderator, in a range of calibres from .223 up to .30-06. The trigger is the adjustable single set type. This model comes with a traditional wooden stock in straight or Monte Carlo configuration.
The metalwork has a modern coating treatment rather than the traditional blueing. “It’s anti-rust and scratchproof,” Andy explains. “Your traditional stalking rifle used to scratch and wear when you were crawling through undergrowth, getting over fences or climbing into a high seat. This is now a much tougher, more durable surface that works really well.”
The rifle has a detachable magazine with a good positive click so you know when it’s in place. “One of the features I really like is the nice big magazine release,” says Andy. “If you’ve got gloves on or really cold hands it doesn’t hinder you at all.”
“It’s got a really nice bolt action, with six locking lugs – most rifles have two or three,” he adds. “You can hear the quality when you work the bolt. Everything comes back nice and slick – it’s what we’ve come to expect from German engineering these days.”
