Ruger 10/22 Takedown: the most reliable, adaptable and portable .22 rifle?

Ruger 10/22 Takedown: the most reliable, adaptable and portable .22 rifle?

The Ruger 10/22 Takedown is quite possibly the .22 enthusiasts dream rifle. Not only does it come with the hallmark quality and ruggedness of the legendary Ruger brand but it also offers shooters adaptability and portability.

ruger-takedown-21133-w-bgWeighing in at around 5 pounds when loaded with a 10-round magazine, it's light but can still pack a punch in the field when compared with a lot of other .22 rifles on the market. Twin this lightweight build with its takedown ability and you've got the perfect rifle for long days on the range target shooting or out and about after vermin.

As the name implies, the rifle breaks down into two pieces. This feature, along with the padded Dura case that it comes with, makes it ideal for taking it on outdoor adventures. It takes only a few seconds to take the rifle down or put it together. The rifle weighs 4.6 pounds empty, making it incredibly light and manoeuvrable. Plus it's compatible with different magazines and rifle scopes.

Ruger: Constantly innovating

The takedown models are where Ruger has been rapidly expanding the line and experimenting with new ideas. Regardless of their other features, these rifles all share a common feature: they can be taken apart with a simple mechanism, making it a small and easy-to-store package.

Aside from that shared feature, these rifles vary widely. In terms of barrel length, they vary from 16.4 to 18.5” in length. You also have a lot of choices in stocks, from wood or several kinds of polymer.

The Takedown is one of the most popular models of 10/22 for a good reason: being able to break it down for storage makes it convenient for everyone, especially backpackers. Price-wise, you do end up paying a small premium for the takedown feature when compared to the less complicated Carbine models. This makes sense since it’s a more complicated mechanism than the other rifles, but is something to consider when making a purchase decision.

We’d recommend a Takedown for someone who wanted a light rifle for backpacking but knew that you might have to carry it for long stretches of time. These also make excellent rifles for storing in the boot of a vehicle.
